British Values
The DfE has reinforced the need “...to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.” The Government first set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy.
At Bowness-on-Solway Primary School, these values were nothing new. In school we:
- enable students to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence
- enable students to distinguish right from wrong and to respect the civil and criminal law of England
- encourage students to accept responsibility for their behaviour, show initiative and to understand how they can contribute positively to the lives of those living and working in the locality of the school and to society more widely
- enable students to acquire a broad general knowledge of and respect for public institutions and services in England
- further tolerance and harmony between different cultural traditions by enabling students to acquire an appreciation for and respect for their own and other cultures
- encourage respect for other people, and
- encourage respect for democracy and support for participation in the democratic processes, including respect for the basis on which the law is made and applied in England.
Democracy
We encourage pupils to understand and participate in decision-making processes, such as voting for class representatives. They are taught fairness, active listening, and the importance of everyone's voice being heard.
The Rule of Law
This important value emphasises the importance of rules and laws in school and society. Pupils learn that laws keep people safe and ensure fairness, and that everyone must follow them.
Individual Liberty
Children are taught that they have the freedom to make choices about their actions and beliefs, whilst understanding the responsibility that comes with those choices.
Mutual Respect and Tolerance
This helps pupils to appreciate the importance of treating others with kindness and consideration, even when they have different views or backgrounds. We understand and respect people from different religious, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, promoting an inclusive and harmonious society.
These core values are integrated into school life through lessons, assemblies, discussions, and activities that help children develop as responsible and respectful citizens.
